Many furniture factories may close due to labour shortage

SHAH ALAM: Many factories in the local furniture manufacturing sector may close within the next six months as they suffer from labour shortage given the recent 50% increase in foreign workers’ levy.

Malaysia Furniture Entrepreneur Association (MFEA) president Desmond Tan urges the Government to immediately review the levy as it increases production costs substantially, amplifying the industry’s difficulty in grappling with falling orders.

MCA wants Cabinet to review levy hike

KUALA LUMPUR: The MCA will draft a working paper for the Cabinet’s attention on the increase in foreign worker levy. Its Public Services and Complaints Bureau chairman Wong Nai Chee said it was getting feedback from the manufacturing and services sectors as it was not the right time to raise the levy in view of the economic situation.

Stop Levy Deductions, Employers Told

By Sajad Hussein KUALA LUMPUR, April 1 (Bernama) -- The government has ordered all employers to stop deducting the cost of levy from the monthly wages of their foreign workers from this month. This was conveyed to the employers through individual letters by the Manpower Department last week, according to the executive director of the Malaysian Federation of Employers, Shamsuddin Bardan.
