MTUC Asks Government To Declare Amnesty For Foreign Workers PDF Print E-mail

PORT KLANG, Dec 6 (Bernama) - The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) on Sunday, called on the government to declare an amnesty to allow the estimated 2.1 million illegal foreign workers to leave the country.

Its vice-president, A. Balasubramaniam said this was the best way to reduce the number of foreign workers in the country. He said the last amnesty from July 1, 2004, to February 2005 was very successful, where 230,000 such workers left the country voluntarily.

TEMERLOH, Dec 1 (Bernama) -- There are about 1.5 million foreign workers in the various sectors in Malaysia compared with two million last year.

Human Resource Minister Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam said the reduced number was due to economic factors and also the work permits of some of the foreigners had expired.

KUALA LUMPUR: The Human Resource Ministry is already dealing with the intake of migrant workers into Malaysia.

Its Minister, Datuk Dr S. Subramaniam, said at present, the ministry was doing so through a "multi-ministerial" joint committee.

He was responding to a call by Tenaganita director Irene Fernandez yesterday that the Human Resource Ministry handle the intake of foreign workers to avoid exploitation.
